High-Speed
Photography at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics All but one of the photographs in this exhibit are the products of projects by former junior and senior high-school students at NCSSM. (The exception--the popcorn burst--was taken by a Casady School student while visiting NCSSM.) The students constructed much of the equipment and devised many of the experimental techniques that were needed for their projects. Many of the projects were designed to investigate natural phenomena that can't be seen under normal conditions. While the photographs are artwork in their own right, they are also data for the investigations. Most of the photos are
representative of large collections that were used in systematic studies of the
phenomena.
Some of the students wrote papers on their work, and some were published. Some
won awards at state and national research competitions and in photo
contests. The exhibit contains both single- and multiple-burst electronic flash photographs. The flash or sequence of flashes was triggered by the sound, motion or impact of the subject. The timing of the multiple-burst photographs was controlled by a computer. All but one of these photographs use a technique in which filters of different colors are placed over the flash units in order to help distinguish overlapping images. The photographs are the property of the student photographers and/or the project sponsor, Loren Winters. Permission is required to copy them. Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view the photos. |
