Magic Lantern

This magic lantern is the only one
in our collection with a wooden body. However, the lens tube
is made of metal. Note the wide and sturdy base on this
model; this perhaps protected the lantern from being tipped over
very easily. But, being made mostly of wood, one might
expect it to be much lighter than magic lanterns made completely
of metal, and one might expect this model to pose a greater fire
hazard. The next page gives an explanation for why this
model remained relatively safe to use.
