Magic Lantern
Wooden body, viewed with open door.
With the door open, the lamp housed within the
body can be seen clearly. Smoke generated inside the lamp
can exit easily through the smokestack, which is just above the
top of the lamp.
Notice the white rectangular platform at the base
of the lamp. This is likely a piece of thick ceramic tile, a
material that does not conduct heat very easily. The wooden
body is lined on the inside by flat sheets of metal, serving to
spread the lamp's heat along a wider surface of the wood so that
no single point becomes too hot. Also notice
the distance between the lamp and the surrounding wood.
These features help make it possible for the magic lantern to
have a wooden body, but still not catch on fire easily.
