Magic Lantern for Kids
Most of the lanterns in this collection were used
by people whose job were to entertain and educate the
public. Like modern professional camera equipment,
professional magic lanterns and their slides were quite pricy.
However, there were also magic lanterns made for the home.
To maximize profits, sellers not only targeted their sales to
parents, but also to children, whose imaginations were very easily
perked by the fascinating images displayed at magic lantern
shows.
Magic lanterns for kids often included tickets and
handbills to such shows, but also served as educational
devices. Kids' lanterns and their slides were often cheaper
than their adult counterparts, which meant that many parents could
afford to buy them for their children. Parents could then
buy slides that depicted major historical events, important
geographic locations, famous people, or perhaps even vocabulary
words to supplement their childrens' learning.
