Textbook and Materials:
This course generally follows the calculus course taught at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The textbook for the course is Contemporary Calculus through Applications by Bartkovich et. al. published by the Everyday Learning Corporation. In order to read the lessons, do homework, and submit labs, you must have a copy of Mathcad®, version 6.0 or later loaded on your computer. You should also have a graphing calculator such as the TI-83, 86, or 89.

Objectives:
The material in this course roughly covers the first two semesters of college calculus. While the AP examinations remain rather traditional, this course offers a rich assortment of problems that illustrate the many and varied applications of the tools of calculus. A student who takes this course seriously can prepare for either the AB or BC Advanced Placement Exam while taking a course that is rich in applications and technology. Topics covered in this course include the derivative and its applications, graphical, numerical and analytic solutions to differential equations, the definite and indefinite integrals and their applications, and Taylor and Fourier series.

Homework
Homework will be assigned everyday in this course. You are responsible for doing all of your homework. I will periodically ask to see your homework, but the responsibility to do your homework remains with you. You must do homework to learn the currents skills and concepts and to be prepared for new material. Your home site teacher may elect to check or collect homework as necessary.

Labs
Labs are a major component of this course. You will work with a partner on labs and submit one paper (file) per pair. You will have some class time to work on labs, but you will need to think, plan, write and revise your labs outside of class. The most convenient way to do these labs is to use Mathcad®. In Mathcad® you can do your math, write text (explanations), and show graphs all in the same document. I strongly suggest making at least two copies of your file and at least one printed copy. You may submit your file to me electronically via email. The first lab will contain instructions for submitting your labs electronically. I will make comments and grades these labs and return them to you also via email.

Tests and Quizzes
Periodically we will have quizzes online. These are not timed, however, they are designed for you to do in 15 minutes or less. You will submit these quizzes directly via the Internet. Test will be taken at your home school using the more traditional paper and pencil. Calculators are allowed on all tests and quizzes.

Grading Policy
Your regular teacher has his or her own grading policy, but knowing that the AP exam is the ultimate test you must pass, standards need to remain high throughout the course.
