NC Team Wins 2006 ARML Competition

On June 2nd 2006, two teams from North Carolina traveled to Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania to compete in the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) Meet. One hundred three teams from across the United States, Canada, Taiwan and the Philippines were in attendance. For a complete list of all the teams, results, contest questions and solutions, visit the ARML website.

As usual, North Carolina sent two teams. One team competed in the A Division, along with the stronger teams, while the other team, which consisted primarily of underclass students, competed in Division B.  The A-Team had the highest scores on three of the four rounds of the meet and placed first in Division A (out of 34 teams) while the B-Team finished 19th (out of 79 teams) in Division B. The 2005 team placed 7th last year. The previous high finish by any NC team was 4th place back in 1987 and 1995.

Most of the members of the A Team were students who had placed in the top twenty at the State Math Contest. The B Team members were all underclassmen and were selected for their outstanding performance on a variety of test - the State Math Contest, the America Mathematics Contests, or the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.  The B-Team is our training ground for future A-Team members.

The coaches for this year's contest were Archie Benton of North Buncombe High School, Ken Thwing of Freedom High, Kathy Hill and Deanna Lancaster of Athens Drive, and David Mermin of Duke University.  A large part of the success of the teams this year were two excellent practice sessions organized by the coaches and held at the NC School of Science & Mathematics.  John Noland of Enloe High also helped with the practice sessions but was unable to accompany the teams to Penn State.

The NC Teams are supported by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics with generous support also given by Duke Energy.

If you would like to represent North Carolina at the 2007 ARML Meet, be sure you attend a Region Math Contest, qualify for the State Math Contest, and take the AMC and AIME math tests.  The 2007 ARML Meet will be held at Penn State in early June.
