The American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) meet was held on Saturday, June 2nd at Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA. Approximately 125 teams competed this year at ARML, representing states, regions or high schools in the United States, Canada, Taiwan, The Philippines, and for the first time this year, Colombia.
The contest included not only an individual round, but also team and power rounds, with numerical and proof-based answers, respectively, in which the entire 15 students worked together to solve the problems. Finally, the 15 students were broken into groups of three for a relay round, in which the students passed their numerical answers from one student to the next, with only the final answer counting toward their team’s score. Of the teams that competed in the (top) A division and in the B division, many did not compete at Penn. State. At two other sites, the University of Iowa and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, teams were simultaneously participating in exactly the same contest, and final standings were based on the scores of the teams at all three sites.
Two teams from North Carolina participated in this meet and were chosen on the basis of their performance in the contests sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) and on their scores on the various tests of the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). The NCCTM sponsors sixteen regional qualifying contests, culminating in the State High School Mathematics Contest. The top fifteen students at this contest were automatically invited to be on one of the two North Carolina Math Teams.
Among the intense competition at ARML, North Carolina’s defending national champion A-team took 4th place in the country behind Phillips Exeter Academy, Lehigh Valley’s A-team and New York City’s A-team. In the B Division, North Carolina’s B team tied for 4th place in the country, which was B's best ever finish. All teams' members (see attached list) were awarded plaques and book awards for their performances, and additionally, many North Carolina students won individual awards.
Team members with a score of 6 out of 8 on the individual round, earning individual medals:
Bae, Hyun Ji (B team)
Berman, John (A team)
Hahn, Jeremy (A team)
Schlieper, William (A team)
Taylor, Bryce (A team)
Vitek, Daniel (A team)
Wang, Bangchen (A team)
The following students competed in a national tiebreaker held simultaneously at the three testing sites, having scored 7 out of 8 on the individual round, earning individual plaques:
Berchenko-Kogan, Yakov (Top 15 in the nation)
Bhattacharya, Vivek
Jiang, Damien
Tripathy, Arnav (8th place in the nation)
The coaches for this year’s teams were Archie Benton of North Buncombe High School in Weaverville, Ken Thwing of Freedom High School in Morganton, Kathy Hill and Deanna Lancaster of Athens Drive High in Raleigh, John Noland of W. G. Enloe High School in Raleigh. The North Carolina Math Teams are sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, with generous support also coming from Duke Energy Corporation. For the past three years Duke Energy has provided additional funding so that this trip costs very little for the individual students.
