Some people freeze food to preserve it, but the goal of the Orange Crushers was to shatter frozen fruit. They quick froze apples, oranges, etc., in liquid nitrogen and then propelled the objects to the floor. A sound trigger detected the sound and discharged a flash unit after a preset delay. The students took their first photographs with a Pentax K1000, but they later switched to a Sony DKC-FP3, shown in the photograph. The inset at lower left shows the remains of shattered fruit. | |||||
