Reactions of Alkali Earth Metals with H2O
Abstract: In our experiments, we dropped lithium, sodium, and potassium into water. We captured unique features of the drops and reactions to further understand how the substances interact. We found that all of the reactions create vapors, bubbles, heat, and sometimes flames and sparks. We used video clips of the reactions to extract information about quantitative aspects of the reactions, such as the velocity of the metal and the paths traveled by the metals.
WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME:
These reactions can create harmful vapors. Metals of high temperatures can erupt and cause burns and cuts.
Ingesting the reactants or products can cause serious injury or death.
