Photo Journal Our photos were taken during three separate days. We learned which techniques worked the best and what we would do different in our next session. Sunday February 16th, 2003 1-4PM What we did: We started by making our set-up. This consisted of hanging a black background, positioning our gun mount, placing the pellet trap, and making a pedestal for the food to rest on while being shot. We set up the camera and flash unit which took a large portion of the session's time as we tried to fine tune the settings. We adjusted the set-up until the BB was captured as it was passing through the middle of the picture frame. After our timing method was established we were able to take a few pictures, although they weren't anywhere near what we were looking for. What we learned: We soon realized that most of the images we were taking were turning out black, this caused us to lose many excellent images that we should of had. This problem was caused by our faulty/ inconsistent timing method. Observations also helped us conclude that the number of pumps for different materials produced different results, and that half swiss cake rolls provided us with better photographs than whole ones when shot. What we will do differently next time: Next time we will increase our shutter speed. This will give us a larger margin for error so if our timing isn't perfect, we won't get black photos.
Very first photo. Isn't it a cutie?
Half a swiss cake roll, cuz we ate the other half.
We blew the top off this swiss cake!!
The BB destroyed the second cracker in the stack, and no other crackers were touched. Tuesday February 18th, 2003 1-5:45PM What we did: To begin, we changed our shutter speed to a longer duration and developed a more communicative counting method for taking pictures. These two changes allowed us to take real "photographs" rather than blank, black ones. We experimented with zooming, focusing, and making aesthetically pleasing images. We made a slight miscalculation with altitude, that defeated the purpose of the pellet trap. This resulted in the moving of our entire set-up. What we learned: Different foods are penetrated by the BB at different rates according to the density of the food. Note to self: 10 pumps>strength of window. What we will do differently next time: We plan to shoot a few other foods, and our set-up is close-to-perfect so we probably wont need to change it.
Experimenting with different camera angles on this donut stick image.
More swiss cake destruction. Take that swiss cake!
Note: This is not a food. Do not try to eat this at home.
Banana pudding anyone? Wednesday February 19th, 2003 2:30-6PM What we did: We met in the lab to take a few more pictures with different foods. This was pretty much a finish up of Tuesday's session. We used the same setup and same settings and edited a few pictures. We finished up with picture-taking and started the website. What we learned: Our setup was perfect so we are the best!! What we will do differently next time: We will edit photos and start the long process of building our website.
Initial impact. The BB hasn't penetrated the chocolate at this point.
No one likes broccoli anyways. [Home] [Method and Setup] [Photo Journal] [Photo Gallery] [Summary]
