Popcorn Photo Gallery

Here is a selection of our best pictures from this project.  Enjoy.

In this photo, the kernel had just popped, and the photogate was most likely set off by the splattering oil, instead of the popping of the kernel

This is another photo of a kernel popping, with a lot of oil splatter

In this photo, the kernel has just barely begun to pop, when it triggered the photogate. In the background is a left-over piece of popcorn

This photo shows a single exposure of a kernel of popcorn after it had completely popped

This photo is a kernel in the midst of popping. It is a good display of the transformation of the kernel into the piece of popcorn

This is a double exposure of the kernel, while resting in the oil, and then the same kernel, popping. The smoke most likely set off the photogate, which is why we have the resting kernel

This is a triple exposure of the kernel at rest, in the air, and then at rest again, fully popped

This photo is a single exposure of a fully popped piece of popcorn

This is our best triple exposure of the sequence of a kernel popping into a piece of popcorn

This photo is of a single piece of popcorn. It was traveling at a high speed, and a single exposure of the piece of popcorn was captured

This is another triple exposure, with all pieces in the sequence in focus

We captured this triple exposure, and as it is out of focus, we assumed that it didn’t pop straight up, but towards us

This is a triple exposure; however the kernel at the bottom of the sequence of the pop is barely visible

This photo is a double exposure, and shows that this piece of popcorn seemed to be moving at a slower rate than the others because the images are not as separated as in the other multiple exposure photos we made

This is the last triple exposure we achieved of the popcorn popping. It is slightly out of focus, but we still used this one, as well as some of the other multiple exposure photos to measure the velocity of a popping kernel

This is a triple exposure of the actual kernel, without it popping. There is a lot of oil splatter, but it is focus
