Rubber
Band Stretching
Conclusion
From our results we were unable
to conclude a relationship between the vertical stretch of a rubber band and its
horizontal stretch when hit by a BB. Our hypothesis that increasing vertical
stretch would decrease horizontal stretch was neither confirmed nor rejected. We
determined that other variables, such as switching the rubber band, placement of
the BB when it hit the rubber band, and overuse caused variation that made our
graph of horizontal stretch vs. vertical stretch random.
Removing or decreasing the
effects of these unexpected factors would have helped us determine if there was
a relationship between vertical and horizontal stretch. To do this we could have
positioned the BB gun closer to the rubber band in order to improve the accuracy
of the hit. Buying a box of identical rubber bands would have reduced the
variation between rubber band switches. Switching the rubber band between each
trial would have removed any variation from overuse.
