Day Activity Notes
M, 3-31
M, 3-31 Read/discuss Course Introduction and Course Policies.
Form activity groups of 2 or 3 students (total of 4 groups). We'll keep these groups for a few days and then reorganize for projects.
A-3: Frequency measurements with an electronic stroboscope. I'll do a demonstration related to the A-3 prelab.
Submit the A-3 prelab. Do this individually. The purpose is to check how well you understood the demonstration activities.
Do A-3 with your activity group. Print the report form and complete one copy for your group. Submit this for the instructor to check and approve before moving on.
Do the prelabs for B-1 and B-2. The same electronic form is used for both prelabs. Do this individually in preparation for Activities B-1 and B-2.
Equipment checkout Equipment for the B series of activities will be checked out to each activity group.
Do B-1 and B-2 with your activity group. Rather than submitting written reports on these activities, we'll discuss the results later as a class.
Continue with Activity B-3 with your group. Complete the report form with your group and submit the form.
Read Activity B-4 and do the online prelab questions. Do this individually in preparation for Activity B-4.
Build and test a sound trigger with your lab group. Get your components from me and see assembly instructions here.
Do Activity B-4 with your lab group. Use your own sound trigger.
Camera checkout Get a camera from me and learn how to use the controls for high-speed imaging.
Do the following for homework before Tuesday's class.
Study Controlling Exposure in Ambient Light. Do the online questions.
Do the prelab for C-2. You'll need to read these documents:
Controlling Exposure When Using Electronic Flash, High-Speed Photography with Still Digital Cameras, and Activity C-2. Also read Trevors' Tips if you're using a point-and-shoot camera.. Do these online reading questions.

Tuesday, 4-1
Discuss the homework as a class and prepare for C-2. We'll also discuss data recording and file management.
Do Activity C-2 in your groups. We'll add to this some photos taken with two other kinds of triggers (contact trigger and photogate).
Deciding on projects Ideas for projects will be presented and discussed. At least four projects will be selected and students will select which project they will work on. Projects that I approved in the fall will automatically be included in the list unless the proposal authors wish to submit a new project idea. Final project proposals will be submitted on this form.
File transfer/backup Provide your group's photo files to me after renaming them.
Equipment check in/lab cleanup Return all equipment in the condition it was provided you. Clean up the area that you were using in the lab. Put rechargeable batteries in the charger.
Preparation for projects Plans and equipment lists will be made so that projects can begin Wednesday.
Wednesday, 4-2
Set up for projects and take preliminary photos
Do the following for homework before Thursday's class. You can divide up the following among your group members.
Write a journal entry for Wednesday's work (basically a story of what you did, what worked, what didn't work, etc.) Save this in a Word file entitled projectname-journal.doc and email to me by 11 PM.
Write a formal description of your method (procedure). Generally, you include in the method what you did and how you used the equipment in order to obtain successful photos. Also include a list of equipment. For items of equipment such as cameras, give make and model info. Save this in a Word file entitled projectname-method.doc and email to me by 11 PM.
Prepare a detailed diagram of your apparatus. You may draw this on paper or create a drawing in software. Label items of equipment. If you use software, title the document projectname-diagram and email to me by 11 PM. If you draw on paper, bring it with you Thursday morning.
Thursday, 4-3
Class meeting to discuss project progress at 9 AM
  Continue set ups and photos
Before leaving the lab today, do the following:
  1. Make sure all your photos are copied to your folder on the T drive and that all photos are renamed and indexed.
  2. Make sure your data page for photos taken today is complete and is saved in your folder on the T drive. Names of actual files must correspond to to those on your data page.

Do the following before Friday's class. You may split the tasks among the group members. Pass around different writing tasks so that the same person is not working on the same part (e.g. journal, method).
Your journal file is in your T drive folder.  Open this file and add to it a journal entry for Thursday. Save it back to the T drive.
Your method file is in your T drive folder. Open this file and save it back to the T drive with the number 2 appended to the filename. Revise and improve the method and save the file back to the T drive. See "Writing the Experimental Method for Your Project."
Email me the following by 11 PM Thursday: Write a revised goal statement for your project. If your goal hasn't changed, simply say so. Then assess the progress to your goal (or revised goal) so far. Tell what you plan to do in the lab Friday. Friday will be the last full day for lab work. There may be some time on Monday to wrap things up, but you'll need to start working on websites Monday.
Friday, 4-4
We'll meet at 8:30 AM in the classroom for a group meeting. The purpose of this one is for you to show off some of your best images to the group and get constructive critiques for improvement. We'll meet a bit earlier Friday than Thursday since we have to surrender the classroom by 9:30 AM.
Continue taking photos. Today is the day to refine your techniques and get the best photos you can get.
Before you leave the lab Friday, do the following:

  1. Upload/rename all new photos on the T drive.
  2. Make sure your updated data page is on the T drive.
  3. Update your journal with an entry for today.

Monday, 4-7
Meet at 9:00 AM. We'll start building websites and continue work on sites throughout the day. If you need more time for photos, you can do that in the afternoon.

For more information about web editing and your web site, see to the right. While you're not required to start on this before Monday's class, you're welcome to do so. However, be sure to do the two editing assignments and review the Final Project Web Site Requirements in advance. Also, everyone in the group must have an equal share in creating the web site. Therefore, it wouldn't be acceptable for one person to do the editing.

We'll be using FrontPage for web editing. This program is available on Physics lab computers. If you want to have it installed on your laptop, see Ms. Padula in ITS. Here are some introductory assignments to get you started using FrontPage:

Web editing assignment 1
Web editing assignment 2

Here are the requirements for your project website.

Final Project Web Site Requirements

Morning: After completing web editing assignments 1 and 2, meet with your group to plan your web site. Plan content and format. Decide on a common format (colors, font size and color, menu, navigation, etc). Decide who will have responsibility for writing what pages. I've set up a web site on the Courses Server for each group. This site is for editing purposes. After your web site is complete, I'll move it to the NCSSM HSI website.
Afternoon:  We'll meet briefly at 1:00 PM in the classroom. Then you can continue working on websites or take more photos. We'll meet again at 3:00 PM so that each group can show the progress on their website so far and the class can provide constructive criticism. Get as much as you can done on your Courses website Monday afternoon and evening. I'll take a look at the sites early Tuesday morning so that I can be ready with comments when we get together on Tuesday.
Tuesday, 4-8
Meet at 9:30 AM in the classroom. We'll do final website editing, lab cleanup, permission forms, and evaluations. You'll have the afternoon available to attend sharing presentations. If you want me to make prints for you, let me know what size. I think we can cover this with Mini Term funds.

If you want the files for your photos, be sure to copy them off the T drive. At some point, the directory on the T drive will be deleted. I don't know when that might happen.
