Horizontal Relaxed Drops

Description: The slinky is now at horizontal relaxed length, and is made to roll off a flat surface.

Problems: Again, the flat surface may not have been perfectly level at the moment of release, but care was taken to minimize this problem. The slinky was also not released at the same horizontal relaxed length or height above the ground during each drop.

Observations:

As a result of having different horizontal relaxed lengths upon release, the slinky does not fall in the same way in all three drops. In the first and third clips, the slinky was dropped from roughly the same height. However, upon comparing the two clips, differences in motion arise from the differences in horizontal relaxed lengths.

In the first clip, the slinky has a greater horizontal relaxed length, and upon release, it contracts. This is the exact opposite of what happened during the horizontal contracted drops, where the contracted slinky relaxed upon release.

In the third clip, the slinky has a smaller horizontal relaxed length, and does not appear to contract as much as it did in the first clip. Although the slinky rotates while falling, it is seen to impact the ground at a smaller length than when first released.

The slinky was released from a higher height in the second clip than in any of the other two. However, the slinky has roughly the same horizontal relaxed length in both the second and third clips, and the motion of the slinky in these clips is similar. The slinky appears to contract only slightly during its fall in both clips.

Other drop clips:

nhr1.avi--the slinky contracts upon release.

nhr2.avi--slinky was dropped from the highest height in all three clips.

nhr3.avi--slinky has the same horizontal relaxed length as in the second drop, and the same drop height as the first drop.
