Balloon Drops


Red water balloons were dropped onto a flat cloth-covered surface.  A contact trigger was placed beneath the cloth.  Each water balloon was dropped onto the trigger, which set off a Vivitar 283 flash unit.  A Sony DKC-FP3 digital still camera with an aperture of f/5.6 and shutter speed of 1 second was used to record each image.

The balloon began flattening upon impact.  In all of the photos, ripples on the balloon are visible.  The balloon behaves like a large water drop that doesn't splash.  For the previous series of photos of water drops in a short fall, the surface tension of the water was sufficient to maintain the integrity of the drop as it collided with the table.  For the water balloon drops, the water acted like a large drop held together by the strong tension force provided by the balloon skin.

In the latter two images, the balloon is rebounding from the table.
