Two-color Splash

by Brett Goldstein

In this photo, a small pool of green milk rested on a hard surface.  A red milk drop collided with it, producing the two-color splash seen here.  Another red drop is on the way.

This is a clever way to tell what happens to the liquid of a drop during the collision.  The inner portion of the crown is lined with red, which could only have come from the red milk drop.  The droplets that are ejected from the splash are all green, but the strands of liquid along the rim are of two colors.  It appears that the red drop has displaced much of the green milk, causing it to accumulate along the rim of the crown.
