Potato Splashes

by Andrew Fernandez and Wesley Williams

Splashes of fruit and vegetables can be interesting.  Unlike liquids, which tend to change shape gracefully, solid foods fragment and splatter their leftovers in nearly all directions after impact.

These two photos show potato pellets colliding with a hard surface at about 150 mph.  The pellets were projected with a hydraulically-driven potato launcher.
