Underwater bubble

Download clip (900 kB)
This splash was filmed from below the water's surface. The camera looks upward toward the undersurface of the water. The drop height remains unchanged.  Backlighting provides greater contrast to visualize underwater portions of the splash.  The initial impact of the drop produces a hemispherical depression in the water prior to forming the column.  Just before the column fully collapses, two bubbles of air form under the column.  One bubble is much smaller than the other, and this smaller bubble travels further underwater.
