General JIT guidelines: You are expected to complete this JIT quiz without the help or assistance of any other person. The tools need to answer this question have either been covered in class or in the assigned reading. You CAN use your book and/or notes.
This week's questions are straightforward (I hope) applications (a calculation, two definitions, and an interpretation) of sections 5(3,4,6) and 19(2).
1. The temperature at the sun's surface is 5800 K. What does Wien's law predict for the color of the sun? Did Wien's law get the color correct? If not, why not? You can divide the 400-nm to 700-nm visible spectrum into 6 colors sort of equally or use the diagram below.
(I know it will be to somewhat annoying to type formulas into boxes below, especially those with greek letters, so simplify and abbreviate as much as possible. In simple formulas, you could just name the law you're using OR write out the formula OR refer to an equation number in the book... in addition to telling me what numerical values you substituted for the knowns; don't bother to show intermediate calculational steps, please.)
2. Give/describe two important differences between flux and luminosity. Be specific!
Which is synonymous with "power" that you learned about in physics last year?
3. Why is it bothersome that the universe has a blackbody spectrum?
I did my own work on this JIT (in other words I consulted NO other person)
