Teaching Contemporary Mathematics Conference 2002
The Mathematics Department of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is pleased to announce a two-day conference on the teaching of contemporary secondary mathematics. The program will include ideas for precalculus and calculus that incorporate technology, realistic applications, mathematical modeling, and student involvement. Topics relevant to the AP Statistics Curriculum will also be addressed. Conference presentations and activities will help participants enhance their everyday teaching through the use of the computer or graphing calculator and through an introduction to content and pedagogy that enables students to become active mathematical learners and problem-solvers. Ideas are applicable to precalculus and calculus as well as algebra II, and statistics. Ample time will be provided for participants to interact with each other and with speakers at the conference. The closing address, "Factors to Convince Us Not to Factor", will be given by Tom Seidenberg of Phillips Exeter Academy. Featured speakers at the conference will include:
Jon Choate from Groton on a modern approach to matrices and transformations;
Gloria Barrett from NCSSM on activities for teaching experimental design;
Landy Godbold from The Westminster Schools on building windchimes as a project in Algebra II or Precalculus;
Floyd Bullard from NCSSM on using Euler's Method to plan a free-return trajectory for an Apollo lunar mission;
Kathy Heid from Penn State University on making connections through CAS and dynamical geometry systems;
Dan Teague from NCSSM on Euler's Method and numerical integration.
