The Mathematics Department of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is pleased to announce a two-day conference on the teaching of contemporary secondary mathematics. The program will include ideas for precalculus and calculus that incorporate technology, realistic applications, mathematical modeling, and student involvement. Topics relevant to the AP Statistics Curriculum will also be addressed. Conference presentations and activities will help participants enhance their everyday teaching through the use of the computer or graphing calculator and through an introduction to content and pedagogy that enables students to become active mathematical learners and problem-solvers. Ideas are applicable to precalculus and calculus as well as algebra II, and statistics. Ample time will be provided for participants to interact with each other and with speakers at the conference.

Scheduled Talks:

The closing address was given by Lee Stiff from North Carolina State University and immediate Past President of NCTM.

Featured speakers at the conference included:

Donita Robinson of NCSSM gave a talk on technology-rich modeling problems in Algebra II that develop skills in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

Gloria Barrett from NCSSM gave a talk on interpreting r^2 and R^2.

Landy Godbold from The Westminster Schools gave a talk on decision making in the presence of variability.

Floyd Bullard from NCSSM gave a talk on using precalculus ideas to plan a trip to Mars.

Dan Teague from NCSSM gave a talk on two-person games and the concept of Nash Equilibrium.
